Stoll – “Software Guinea Pigs”

Until reading this chapter, I never realized it, but that’s what we are. When we buy this new software, it’s not even being thoroughly tested. It can’t be – there’s no time. Companies that make this software are under a lot of pressure to come up with the next big thing. They have to compete. If they take too long to make their product, someone else will beat them to it. The programs they put out there are so buggy that when we buy them, many times we just give up on them or find a way around the bug. Sometimes, the programs that came on our computers become outdated, and we feel the need to keep up with the times. It’s honestly just easier to go and buy a new computer than deal with all of the updating… especially for someone like me who knows all about the Internet but not much about the technical nonsense.
